Kaimganj, just north of our afternoon route, was the hometown of Zakir Husain, India's third president and the first Muslim to hold the office. The town is known for its tobacco and its Pathan heritage.
Farrukhabad was founded in 1714 by the Nawab Muhammad Khan Bangash and named after the Mughal emperor Farrukhsiyar. Nearby Kampil is linked in the Mahabharata to Draupadi, and across the river is Sankisa, where Buddhists believe the Buddha descended from heaven.
Local heroes
Zakir Husain, President of India from 1967 to 1969, grew up in Kaimganj. Farrukhabad was a seat of the Bangash nawabs, and its block printers made the city one of India's great centres for hand printed textiles.
