Biking and working: desk jobs

Lose the shades!

June 26th, 2015

This striking contraption is generating buzz in various online news outlets.

Accompanied by the hashtag #BikeWhileWorking, the bike is an effort to celebrate Chicago Bike Week (12-19 June), and also to celebrate (and hopefully improve) the city’s recent award of 6th most bikeable in the US.

Scott Rench, who designed the bike, told the Chicago Business Journal:

#BikeDesk is about inspiring people to slow down and find the time to be a tourist in our amazing town — whether commuting to and from work or even during their lunch hour

We certainly think those are two great things to promote, and the stunt got us thinking about the role of the bicycle in our working lives. To some the two are unlinked. Others commute by bike, perhaps helped by the fantastic Bike to Work scheme. Some people make their livelihoods by cycling, and a tiny few give up work altogether to go and explore the world by bike.

Digging deeper into the stories surround people’s relationships with their bike always yields fascinating results, and it’s testament to the versatility of the machine that it can mean so many things to so many people.

This considered, we’ll be exploring a few of these stories over the coming weeks – keep an eye out for part 2 of this series!
